What are Portara's main products?

NOTE: Portara is now a mainline product within CQG

Portara has 4 main products:

  • Portara Standard Daily - Daily Database only
  • Portara Charts Daily RTH (Regular Trading Hours) based off intraday database
  • Portara Charts Intraday - Full intraday access to 1 min timeframe
  • Portara Tick - Currently in development

Portara Charts is an offline historical intraday data solution interacting with CQG's intraday and daily historical datafactory databases. You are able to roll the actual files to produce continuous files, roll the continuous files to produce compressed files to any desirable format. You may update these extracted files via the daily update service to keep complete integrity of your CQG historical databases. Historical daily and intraday databases are available from 1960 to date. See here...

Portara Charts Daily RTH uses the CQG intraday database so that you can choose where to place your own customisable session markers when creating daily bars. That way you can choose where to set your opens and closes within the 24 hour data. It also includes the regular CQG daily database so you are able to still create regular daily backadjusted data and more importantly, access the settle prices.

Portara Charts Intraday provides all the features of Portara Charts Daily RTH but opens up the whole of the CQG intraday database down to the 1 minute resolution. You can roll contracts and create any stream using customisable session markers. You can create any timeframe data in any format to suit your back-testing needs and requirements. The Trade Volume (from the tick) is also included.

What are the System Requirements?

You need a good 64 bit machine. There is no 32bit version as that just wont cut it.

To run Portara Charts with the CQG database(s) on your machine the following minimum system requirements are necessary:

  • Processor: Dual-Core. Intel® Core™2 Duo (2.33 Ghz or better) suggested. Intel Quad-Core i5 or i7 is recommended. 64bit ONLY recommend fastest processing machine available.
  • Multi Cores: Any number. However more cores in many cases equates to better performance. Intel performs better over AMD*. Good optimisation at 12 cores. Hyperthreading supported and virtual cores supported. EG 6 cores and 6 virtual cores = 12 cores compiling and running.
  • Operating System: 64 bit Windows® 7/8/10, Windows 64 bit Vista, or 64bit Windows XP. Windows Server 2003/2008 Windows 2000 is not supported.
  • Memory: 8GB RAM.recommended.
  • Hard Drive: Depends on CQG database size, Recomment 2Tb and up recommended.
  • Network Adapter: Network Interface Card (NIC) configured to use TCP/IP (required for DSL, Cable, or T1).
  • Internet Access: Internet service via a high-speed connection, such as DSL, cable, or fixed wireless/wireless local loop (WLL).
  • Connectivity using Ethernet cabling is preferred over wireless connections. Internet over Satellite (loS) is not recommended. Dial-up is not supported. Portara Charts runs under a smart distribution paradigm, a continuous connection to the internet is always required.
  • Video Card: Dual-port graphics adapter with 128Mb of memory, 64Mb per port. 1GB DDR3 or better is recommended.
  • Multi-Monitor Configuration: These specifications are appropriate for single- and dual-monitor setups. If you have three or four monitors, you need a higher-performance processor, video card, and network connection. Dual monitor setup recommended as minimum.
  • Power-Saving Settings: Hibernate and stand by modes should be avoided or disabled on a system running Portara Charts. Hard drive power-saving features should also be disabled.
  • Windows Home v Professional: Remote Debugging support may be included in Professional Windows only. Home versions do not support the feature.
  • Optional: Sound 16-bit SoundBlaster™ compatible sound card for audible signals.

* After many hardware performance tests.

Parallel Programming & Multi-core machines, what are the advantages?

Portara Charts was constructed with parallel programming tasks. This means that you may increase the speed of your extractions according to your needs and requirements. Users with machines that are multi -core will experience significant speed increases in the region of 2x faster for each doubling of cores on the machine.

A machine operating with 64 cores may be twice as fast as a machine with 32 cores, 4x faster than a 16 core machine, 8x faster than an 8 core machine and 32 x faster than the standard 4 core machine. Extraction speed is therefore in your hands.

Portara can build single machines with up to 64 cores on the motherboard running Windows Server 2008 which these days are comparatively inexpensive. Please ask for details.

Portara will run perfectly well on any standard 64 bit machine running Windows 7, XP or Server 2008. if multi-core workstations are not required.

>What Parallel Hardware Options would you suggest?

Portara has done numerous testing with TitanUS concerning benchmarking and extraction timing. TitanUS can build multi-core systems up to 64 cores on 1 motherboard to your requirements and are extremely well priced. See a demonstration of a multi-core Titan machine running Portara Charts using Windows Server 2012 here.

NOTE: Portara products will run perfectly well on any 64 bit machine. Usually machines such as laptops and desktops have 2-4 cores as standard. Advanced parallel options above 4 cores are available via specialist hardware solutions.

Can I access the CQG Actual Contracts directly?

Yes However, licensing is different for this feature.

Regardless of your product subscription and in all cases, the user has complete access to the Actual Contracts and may chart the Actual Contracts within Portara Charts regardless of whether the subscription is 'RTH' or 'Unlimited Access', the Actual Contracts are still viewable and chartable to the 1 minute level in all cases. (Standard daily product, of course only accesses Daily database via charts and data vies)

HOWEVER, Only Full Access Intraday editions of Portara (Not RTH or Standard Daily) may upgrade their licence agreements to access the Actual Datafactory databases directly.  With this feature enabled you may still format compress and use sessions on the actual data (known as tenors) that you wish to extract.  The main differences is that you can SAVE the data to ASCII/CSV /TXT. in any format you need.

How does the Portara CQG subscription operate?

You will be subscribing to the usage of the CQG datafactory databases and Portara for as long as you need it.
